Share Your Location in iMessage [Just-A-Tip]

Our smartphones are making it easier and easier to share information with one another. Almost too easy. With your iPhone, iOS 8 and iMessage, you can easily share your location with your contacts.

When would you use something like this? Let’s say you’re out with friends and someone would like to join you. Instead of jumping on the phone, which some may find rude, you can send them your current location to meet-up.

Another creative way you can use this feature is while at a theme park, like the Magic Kingdom in Disney World. With some friends or family members looking to enjoy a different experience, you can separate and easily meet back up without having to choose a meeting location and time. When those in your party want to join back up with you, just send them your location. Now nobody has to stop what they’re doing to head back to a specific spot at a specific time. Just make sure you stay in or around the same place, unless you’re wanting to laugh at them while they wander around aimlessly looking for you.

If you’d rather continuosly share your location with them so they’re able to rejoin the group at their liesure, you can do that too. You’ll have to decide how long you want to share your location with them though.

In order to take advantage of these location features, select Details in the upper right hand corner of an iMessage to them or a group of friends. Next you must choose to Share My Current Location or Share My Location. If you select Share My Current Location, a message will automatically be sent with your current location. If you select Share My Location, you must then choose between Share for One Hour, Share Until End of Day or Share Indefinitely. You might want to share your location indefinitely with family members. Friends or business contacts on the other hand will most likely fall into the day or hour category. I love my friends and contacts, but they don’t need to know where I’m at all the time.

If you or someone you know is sharing a location continuously, this information is accessible via the Find Friends app or by tapping Details in an iMessage to this particular contact.

One of the great things about this feature is when someone shares their location with you, you can easily get directions to their location. Simply select the map in the iMessage and at the bottom of the next screen tap Directions To Here. Now you don’t have to worry about trying to figure out how to get there. Your iPhone or iPad will do all the work for you.
